Watch
Out! is a non-verbal behavior system that functions much
like a traffic light.

Green
- Keep it up (following classroom rules)
Yellow - Slow down (5
minutes off recess and fill out a Timeout Sheet)
Red - Stop (a note home or immediate trip to office,
if necessary)

In the
front of the room there is a pocket chart. The chart has a
green, yellow and red section and each child has their own
number on an index card, placed in the chart.
Everyday the children start out on green. If a child has been
seen making bad choices and not following one or more of the
rules then they move to yellow. If they are still on yellow
by recess then they must miss 5 minutes and fill out a Timeout
Sheet during this time. The Timeout Sheet asks the student
questions that pertain to their misbehavior and how they feel
it can be improved. I require that these sheets be brought
home and signed by a parent in order to ensure that they are
aware of their child's behavior. Hopefully that is all it
takes for the behavior to stop and the child to return to
green. However, in some cases students must go to red and
a note is sent home informing a parent of what has occurred.
If the behavior is extreme then they immediately go to red
and are sent to the Principal's Office.
It is important for children to remember that they can always
go back to green at any point if an effort is made on their
part to do their best. |
